Tory Burch
Known for her exotic prints and play on colors, Tory Burch is one of the most successful fashion companies known today. Starting the company in 2004, Burch went against the minimalist trend and created something truly her own. Burch was born in 1966, in the metropolitan area of Philadelphia where she attended the Agnes Irwin School in Rosemont, PA, and the University of Pennsylvania where she studied art history and was a graduate of the 1988 class. With fashion forward parents, Burch soon caught on to the fashion in the family. After graduating from college, she moved to New York City and began her career with fashion designer, Zoran, a Yugoslavian designer. She soon worked at Harper’s Bazaar magazine and she was a copywriter for Polo Ralph Lauren and worked for Vera Wang. While working for other companies, Burch began to think of her own line and started to think of what she was “Personally missing” and it was the idea of “American sportswear with a more global point of view.” Her line was an immediate success and the original Tory Burch boutique at 257 Elizabeth Street had almost completely sold out of inventory. A year after the launch of her line, it soon became endorsed by Oprah Winfrey on the Oprah Winfrey Show. From then on she grew and today there are 68 Tory Burch stores worldwide, 48 in the US and 20 internationally and her fashion line is carried at over 1,000 department and specialty stores worldwide.
