Kihyun Kim Design
Earning the title Designs of the Year 2012 for Furniture at the Design Museum in London, Kihyun Kim is the creative driving force behind the Balsa Wood Furniture collection. Using industrial design to create furniture, electronic products and living accessories, the South Korean born designer has developed a series of objects that project a refined modern essence exhibited through his craft. Using compressed balsa wood, lime wood, and hardwood veneer, the ’1.3 Chair’ is an example that reflects Kim’s innovative artistic spirit. Having been inspired by the British wooden bomber aeroplane, the everyday modest chair has been reinterpreted through alternative industrial techniques. With its lightweight feel yet, durable design, the chair is a great alternative in support of the environmental benefits and productive capacity. The designer has challenged the industry as the material is often surpassed due its overt softness for furniture construction, and has astonishingly demonstrated his ability to explore, take risks and simply create one-of-a kind designs.
