Guest Editor: Jessica Jabroux of Style Quotidien

By Sylvia Chun on Thursday, August 2, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Lively’s newest guest editor, Jessica Jabroux, hails from Paris and is the editor-in-chief of Style Quotidien. Style Quotidien shares Lively’s passion to promote upcoming individuals in art, fashion, photography, and the likes by engaging and the familiarizing the public with the works of the new spotlights in the creative industry. Jabroux’s infatuation with fashion enables her to encourage the world to focus on the significance of conservation of the environment and to notice fashion as an art form. Here she discusses art, fashion and her 5 must-haves.

What is your favorite go-to outfit for the average summer day?
Silk or cotton maxi tank dresses are a great item because they’re so versatile – they’re like a blank canvas. They can be worn casual or dressed up depending on how you accessorize them. They keep you cool when it’s hot but they can be layered when it’s cooler. So basically I live in these all summer!

What are five things you keep in your purse that you can’t live without?
My métro pass. The Paris métro is my main source of transportation, so I make sure to have my pass with me at all times.
A reusable shopping bag. It’s made of organic cotton, it hardly takes up any space and I use it ALL the time.
A hardcover notebook. I use this to keep track of everything going on and to write down ideas for photoshoots. I could use my phone for this but I’m too old school.
An umbrella. Paris weather is unpredictable so I always have a mini umbrella packed away just in case!
A ribbon from artist Rivane Neuenschwander, which I picked up at the Museum of Modern Art in Dublin that reminds me to live without fear.

Can you name a few of your favorite brands and tell us what attracts you to them most?
More and more, I am trying to be a responsible consumer. I am making an effort to stay away from mass produced clothing at the major chains. Instead I am focusing on sustainable fashion and smaller local brands. I am supportive of environmentally conscious brands such as United Bamboo, People Tree, Edun, and The Sway. I have also made a promise to myself to only buy shoes that are made in Italy or Spain instead of mass produced in China. For me, the quality of the garment is quite important – I don’t like it when something falls apart after a few wears, regardless of its price. I also prefer to buy clothing made from natural materials like organic cotton, hemp, linen, silk, and wool as opposed to polyester and other synthetic fabrics. The cut and fit of a garment are important to me, as well.

How do you personally connect art and fashion?
I think that both style and art are creative forms of personal expression – they are both a reflection of who you are and how you’re feeling. Fashion and art are also quite demonstrative – they can communicate a message or evoke certain emotions. At the same time, they can also be humorous and fun. Personally, I love the creative and less serious side of fashion. I like finding unique pieces that no one else has, so I’m always trying to discover designers or brands that aren’t well known. I also try to never wear the same piece the same way twice. It forces me to be more inventive and to really have fun with my clothes and accessories. I like playing with color too – especially clashing or contrasting colors.

I also try to make a connection between art and fashion through the original photo series I do for Style Quotidien. I have done many fashion and beauty shoots with my team, and my focus now is to go outside of the basic format in order to create something that has an artistic value beyond the obvious fashion aspect. My goal is to create photos that transcend the superficial and speak to people on a deeper level. I am lucky to be able to work with such creative and talented people who share my passion to bring something new and meaningful into the world.

Which artist/designer inspires your fashion sense the most?
True artisans are the most inspiring. They do their craft because they love creating something special using a technique that has been around for generations. They make each item by hand so there is a lot of care and reflection in each piece. I find the process of creating a shoe by hand to be similar to that of creating a sculpture. Sadly, handmade clothing and accessories are becoming a lost art. Very few ateliers remain that create items by hand – shoes, knits, tailored pieces. As for a specific style, I have Chippewa ancestry so I really love anything Native American – especially authentic handmade jewelry. Jewelry can be little pieces of art in themselves, so I’m drawn to pieces that are unique and special. I avoid diamonds and gems for political reasons but I love natural stones and crystals.
