By Sylvia Chun on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Colors and art surrounding the natural, tropical islands of her hometown of Guyana, South America, serves as makeup artist’s Christine Lewis’ inspirations. Mixing modernism and classicism in her work, Lewis never fails to complete her assignments according to the theme, adding touches of drama or simplicity. Her goal is to enhance one’s natural beauty, rather than “cloaking it”. Lewis’ work has been featured in Highlights Magazine, And Men, and includes partnerships with fashion designers, as well as modeling agencies. Lewis currently resides in New York City and works as a freelance makeup artist. To view the work of Lewis, click here.

How did you first get involved in the makeup industry?
I first got into makeup through a best friend of mine, she gave me inspiration when she showed me how the use makeup can transform anything into something beautiful. I was surprised a product can have this great effect, not only in transformation but also a great impact on a person’s self-esteem.

Did growing up in Guyana, surrounded with the natural colors and beauty of nature, influence your work in any way?
Yes, growing up in Guyana as a child has influenced my work in may ways. I feel the beauty of nature play a big part in my work because I like the natural look, overall. I always want that natural look in my work compared to covering who a person is. When I apply makeup on a client’s or model’s face, I want to enhance their natural beauty rather than covering it or make them not look like themselves.

Where else do you look to for inspiration?
I also get inspiration from everywhere in the city or sometimes I just go with my inner feelings and do what I feel looks the best while I am working with a model/clients. Certain techniques and textures of makeup looks the best on certain skin types compared to others.

Do you have a signature style?
Clean, natural but with an edge. I also like to do editorial makeup, it’s an art that you can express yourself through creativity.

You work for agencies such as Marylin, New York Models, Trump, and Supreme. What type of makeup do you use on the photoshoots?
I mostly use products from Make Up For Ever, Lancome, Dior, L’Oreal, M.A.C. products, or an all pro-store makeup brand.

What factors do you consider when deciding on a certain look for a model?

Deciding on a certain look for a model depends on the concept of the shoot, the mood of the shoot, the wardrobe styling, hair-styling, and base it on everything. We choose what works together; everything must come together for a great, complete look.

What will you be involved with next?

It’s hard to say because in the world of makeup and the reason why I love this job is that one day you can be in NYC, and then the next you can be somewhere around the world booked on a job. My future goal is to travel the world doing what i love to do (makeup) for runway fashion shows with designers and do campaign, commercial, and magazine work.

JR

JR is an artist whose work is hard to classify, however he calls himself a “Pervasive Artist”, and touches on topics such a poverty, politics, and culture. He pastes large scale, full frame portraits of every day citizens from countries all over the world on buildings, bridges, walls, and a variety of different structures. He wants to create interaction between the subject of the photograph and the many people coming in contact with, and viewing said photograph. JR’s work is all about raising questions, causing discussions, and making people think more about what they see when they come across his projects.   What inspired JR to organize and put together such larger-than-life photography projects? JR’s pasting streek all started with his project Portrait of a…
